On June 11th, 1977 a three week long hijacking of a train in The Northern part of The Netherlands came to an end. In the early 1950's a group of Moluccan military and their families were brought to The
Netherlands. The Moluccan soldiers were part of the Royal Dutch
Indonesian Army (KNIL) and were promised to be able to return to their homeland after the independence of Indonesia. More than twelve thousand Moluccans were transported to The Netherlands by military vessels. Upon arrival they instantly lost their military status and a lack of housing caused them to spend their first years living in former Nazi concentration camps in Vught and Westerbork. The promise made by the Dutch government for them to return was broken and after years of discontent a group of
disillusioned Moluccan youngsters took action by hijacking a train in De Punt. After three weeks and several failed attempts the Dutch government took military action to rescue the hostages
